Q / A:

  • What*s the difference between Audition and Competition? What kinds of awards are available for the winners?

Out of all NJMTA programs, the Young Musicians Competition is the most competitive program which offers to all students. While the Audition Recital program is also a competitive program, it focuses more on preparing students for concert performance setting. The degree of challenge is not as severe as competition. There are other non-competitive programs within NJMTA family, however, at this time, because of the limited management resources, Chinese instrument have not yet been included in those programs.

The winners of audition will not only receive ※High Honor§ or ※Honor§ award certificates, they will also be given opportunities to perform at the winners* recitals. Performers and Honorable Mention students will receive certificates only.

The winners of the Young Musicians Competition will receive 1st place (no tie), 2nd place (no tie), 3rd place (tie is possible) and Honorable Mention (tie is possible) award certificates, as well as the trophy and medal for the 1st place and 2nd place winners.

  • For recital audition registration, how do I fill in the ※years of award§ filed?

As a special incentive and rewards, students will receive medals for performing three years, trophies for five and seven years and plaques for ten or more years in the same category in either High Honors or Honors Recitals.

To be qualified for the same category, you need to be the winners on the same instrument in the past years. Ensembles and solos are treated separately too.   In other words, if a student participated in solos for the previous two years, and this year only does ensemble, He/she CANNOT get a medal.  He/she has to do 3 years of solos or 3 years of ensemble to earn a medal.

  • Who may participate NJMTA programs:

To be eligible to participate in any NJMTA programs, the student or their teacher has to fulfill one of 3 requirements:

1.       Live in NJ; 2. Studies in NJ; 3. Teacher lives in NJ.

  • If my teacher is not a NJMTA member, can I participate in NJMTA programs?

Since NJMTA is a membership organization, currently, all instruments except Chinese instruments have to follow the rule in its Yearbook under Teachers Eligibility, which states "the teacher must be a member of NJMTA and current membership dues to NJMTA must be paid on or before September 1, 200X.  An exception to the September 1st payment of teacher dues will be granted to a teacher joining NJMTA for the very first time...§. The exception was approved by the NJMTA board to encourage more Chinese instrument students to participate in NJMTA programs. However, the decision was also made at the meeting that those students of non-member teachers will have to pay double registration fees to partially offset the cost from member teachers* duties, because all member teachers are required to volunteer their valuable time at NJMTA competitions and events in addition to pay their membership dues.

  • How much fees do I need to pay for 2009 audition & competition?

Audition:         For solo or ensemble students of

NJMTA members (as of 9/1/2008), the fee is $30 for solo and  $20 each student in an ensemble

Non-NJMTA members (as of 9/1/2008), the fee is $60 for solo and $40 each student in an ensemble

Competition: For solo or ensemble students of

NJMTA members (as of 9/1/2009), the fee is $35 for solo and  $40 per ensemble group

Non-NJMTA members (as of 9/1/2009), the fee is $70 for solo and $80 per ensemble group

  • How many categories in terms of age and instrument will the judges be based on in selecting the solo and ensemble winners in competitions or auditions?

For auditions, students are only judged by their own live performances regardless of their age group. For competitions, solo students will be competing with other solo students in their own age group,     while ensembles are also competing with other ensemble groups. Ensembles do not have age groups.

  • How many age group categories will be available for the competition:

    • Age 10 and under
    • Age 11 每 14
    • Teacher lives in NJ

  • Will different instruments be under different categories in competition?

For Chinese instrument, the number is still not big enough.  For example, violin is by far the largest number of competition, but they still compete with other instruments, like cellos, violas & harp at this time. NJMTA is not separating violins out.  In fact, even in the ASTA (American Strings Teachers Assoc) competitions, they also put all the strings together. There are some competitions which are cellos only, violins only, or even violas only. However, NJMTA is still young to tackle that. Until we see a large numbers of Chinese instrument participants in NJMTA, then may be we could consider in the future as a board.

  • Do students have to memorize the song they are playing?

Yes, all songs need to be memorized except ensembles.

  • Can I write the name of my music piece in Chinese characters in the registration form?

      Yes, you may.
